Issue 091: Are You a Scrappy Professional?

When it comes to entrepreneurship or intrapreneurship, is there a vision, word, or phrase that comes to your mind?

For me, it’s scrappy. Maybe it’s because I’ve heard it a time or two. Growing up with three brothers, you tend to be scrappy. Although some people consider it a negative word, others think of it positively. Boxing fans will use it when referring to a fighter who’s an underdog with a strong, determined character.

Researchers and journalists will use scrappy when referring to startups and grassroots companies. However, for me, it’s companies or non-profits that learn, take action, and adjust their actions according to the outcomes produced.

Scrappy reminds me of serial entrepreneur Joe Kapp whose vision to relaunch National Entrepreneurship Week took place on a snowy evening in Appalachian, Ohio. National Entrepreneurship Week, designated by an act of congress, originated in 2006. However, it had become dormant for many years. With much determination, Joe relaunched National Entrepreneurship Week as NatlEship Week in 2017. (One needs to be scrappy when working against the proverbial red tape.) This week, February 12th through February 19th celebrates NatlEship Week.

Scrappiness isn’t only for entrepreneurs. It’s for intrapreneurs, too. I first heard the term intrapreneurs through consultant and colleague Rebecca Harris. Paraphrasing, intrapreneurship combines entrepreneurship and management skills while working within a company.

Three behaviors of scrappy professionals:

  1. Commit to a result.

  2. Stop trying to be everything to everyone.

  3. Do more with less.

Bounce-Up™ Momentum Builders

  1. Is it time to get scrappy?

  2. Are you trying to swim in every lane instead of your own?

  3. Are you producing the outcomes you or your company wants?
